Autumn/Winter 17 Collection
“A tribe is a group of people who share the same language, belief system, and way of living. ” I have always been fascinated by Africa, and wanted to draw together African tribal elements, from the Bamiléké Bantu groups who reside in Cameroon, to the Yoruba in Nigeria, to the Nyangatom tribe of Ethiopiaand southern Sudan. I also looked at the Māori people in New Zealand, and the Aborigines in Australia. As a result its a textile-heavy collection, filled with colour and texture – but reworkedin a contemporary way.”
Desert, soul, freedom: Angel Chen’s unisex collection seeks to promote the colourful individual within the pack. Transposing tribal craft elements and fabrics to an urban landscape, Chen seeks to celebrate characters who act cool, walk strong, and live to explore the great outdoors.
Textural clashes define the collection. Luxurious faux fur jackets in powder pink and forest green mingle with over-dyed Japanese denim separates; metallic yarn tasselled capes appear alongside logo-print woollen fringed ponchos, both developed in collaboration with the specialist French mill Malhia Kent. The windbreaker, an Angel Chen unisex signature, is given a parachute hem for autumn and comes in a graffiti-print technical bonded fabric, a sharp metallic coated nylon and a hand-embroidered version.
Accessories are whimsical: faux fur mules, shiny metallic boots and chunky crepe-soled sandals make a statement. Hand-beaded jewellery is inspired by the conical beaded crowns worn by Yoruba kings. The stand-out Lizard backpack comprises three detachable compartments. Venturing into the unknown has never been so easy.
